Becoming an LPN in Washington DC

The first step in becoming an LPN in Washington, D.C. is to complete an education program that has been approved by the District's Board of Nursing or a Board in another state or territory with standards that are determined to be comparable to DC's. The individual also fulfills the education requirement if he or she has been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a clinical specialist after completing a practical nursing program. For individuals trained in foreign countries who wish to become an LPN in DC, the educational requirements are slightly different. The individual must prove that his or her education is equivalent to the obtained in the District, complete the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) exam, and demonstrate written and spoken English competency.

After Completing the Training

After completing the education requirements, an individual must apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The requirements for the NCLEX application are:
  • The applicants social security number on the application, or a sworn affidavit that he or she does not have one
  • 2 passport-type photos
The individual must also have his or her official transcripts and a recommendation letter from the school's nurse administrator sent directly to the Board. One must take the NCLEX within 90 days of applying, and pay any fees required. If the test is failed the first time, one is eligible for retest after 45 days. After 3 years, an individual must complete an additional education requirement in order to retest.

Renewing an LPN License

LPN Licenses must be renewed every 2 years. There are continuing education requirements that must be met in order to renew. LPN must complete 18 continuing education hours in order to qualify after the first renewal. These may be completed in one or more of the following ways:
  • By showing an original verification form signed and stamped by the program director.
  • By providing proof of having completed an undergraduate/graduate nursing course.
  • By proof of having taught or developed a board-approved course.
  • By writing or editing a book, chapter, or peer periodical.
