There are many RN programs in Kansas that an individual can go through to start his or her career career, and with a little effort, he or she could be on track for a rewarding and high demand career for the future. There are different levels of education than an individual can pursue in order to become a nurse. He or she could obtain an associate's degree in around 2 years, or a master's degree in around 4 years. Higher levels of education typical result in higher paid jobs, so obtaining a master's degree is often a great investment.
Becoming an RN by Examination in Kansas
In Kansas, one can become licensed either by examination or endorsement. The first step in becoming licensed is to have completed an approved nursing education program.
In order for an individual to be licensed by examination, he or she must submit a licensure application and pass the NCLEX. He or she has a 2 year window following graduation in which to take the licensing exam before additional requirements must be met.
The following items must be submitted for licensure by examination:
- Completed application and any required fees
- Valid photo
- Completed waivers and fingerprint card
- NCLEX registration and Authorization to Test (ATT)
- Official Transcript
Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have a CGFNS Professional Report for credential evaluation. If an individual graduated from a program that was not taught in English, he or she must prove English proficiency by taking the TOEFL or similar exam.
Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Kansas
Those who are licensed in another state or jurisdiction can become licensed by endorsement. In order to do so, individuals must submit the following to the board:
- Completed application and fees
- Criminal background check äóñ must be a written explanation of any convictions or disciplinary actions
- Completed fingerprint card
- Official transcript showing education requirements are met
- If one has not practiced in the past 5 years: completion of an approved refresher course
- Verification from original state of licensure
Renewing an RN License
Licenses are valid for 2 years, and expiration depends on an individual's date of birth. RNs in Kansas are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education in each renewal period to be eligible.
