Becoming an RN in Pennsylvania

In PA, one can become an RN either by examination or by endorsement. In order to become licensed by examination, one must have have completed a Board-approved education program for registered nursing. Then, he or she must submit the Pennsylvania Exam/TPP application to the Board of Nursing and then register and take the NCLEX.

In order to become licensed by endorsement, one must be licensed in another state or jurisdiction by an education program and exam equivalent to the one used by PA. If the applicant has allowed his or her license to lapse for 5 years or more, he or she must fulfill continuing competency requirements before becoming licensed in Pennsylvania.

Foreign applicants can also apply for licensure by endorsement as long as they have completed the NCLEX in other state or jurisdiction. In addition, the individual's education must be deemed equivalent by the Board based on the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) evaluation.
