Becoming Licensed by Examination in South Carolina

In order to become licensed by examination, an individual must have graduated from an approved nursing education program. The exam used to license RNs is the NCLEX-RN. In addition to the application for licensure, an individual must submit the following items to the board:

  • Application fee
  • Recent passport-type photo
  • Copy of birth certificate or passport
  • Copy of Social Security Card or equivalent
  • Copy of any applicable name change documents
  • SC Graduates: completion date of coursework from the Dean
  • Non-SC Graduates: Official Transcript
  • Foreign Graduates: CGFNS Certification and passing TOEFL score
  • Criminal Background Check and FBI Fingerprint Cards

Becoming Licensed by Endorsment in South Carolina

Those who are residents of and licensed in a non-compact state or are licensed in another compact state but now reside in South Carolina can become licensed by endorsement. Applicants must submit the following items:

  • Recent passport-type photo
  • Copy of birth certificate or passport
  • Copy of Social Security Card or equivalent
  • Copy of current nursing license
  • Evidence of continued competence
  • Proof of residence
  • Verification of Licensure from original state
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Application Fee

Those who wish to renew an RN license must fulfill continuing education requirements to do so.
