In the medical profession, there are several different levels of education that can be achieved, and each one serves and important role in making the patient experience as comfortable as possible.

Becoming an LPN in West Virginia

An individual wishing to become an LPN in West Virginia must have at least a 10th grade education. The following situations make one eligible for licensure by examination:
    • He or she holds a diploma from an accredited practical nursing program.
    • He or she served active duty in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Armed Forces for at least 1 of the last 3 years, so long as he or she has reached a sufficient rank in medical training.
    • He or she completed an equivalent nursing program outside of the U.S. and can submit proof of English proficiency.

After Completing the Training

Once education requirements have been reached, an individual must pass the National Council State Boards of Nursing licensure examination. Those who were trained outside of the U.S. must have a complete transcript submitted and translated into English. All applicants must submit fingerprints and be subject to a background check. While waiting for exam results, a graduate of an approved nursing program can apply for a graduate temporary permit that is valid for 90 days and non-renewable. If the student does not pass the exam, the permit ceases to be valid.

Renewing an LPN License

An LPN in West Virginia must renew his or her license annually in order to continue practicing. He or she can request non-practicing status at any time to avoid the renewal process, but one cannot be employed as an LPN when this is in effect. In addition, LPNs must complete at least 24 contact hours of continuing education and 400 clock hours of practicing as an LPN in each 2 year reporting period.
