Becoming a CNA in Delaware

To become a CNA in Delaware, an individual must complete the required training in an approved CNA program, and pass Delaware's CNA certification exam. In order to be eligible to take the exam, a person wanting to become a CNA must submit an application and wait to be notified as to whether or not they will be allowed to take the exam.

Licensure by Reciprocity

If the individual is already a licensed CNA in another state, they made apply directed to be added to the Delaware CNA Registry if they meet the following conditions:

  • The applicant must already be listed as 'active' in another state's CNA registry.
  • The applicant must not have any pending or substantiated findings of wrongdoing or misconduct (patient neglect, abuse, etc.)
  • The applicant must have worked as a CNA for the equivalent of at least 3 months full time (420 hours) under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician OR the applicant has completed an 150 hour CNA training program.

Delaware CNA Certification Requirements

To get your CNA certificate in Delaware, you first need to complete the required course work and/ or training program. You will need to pass the Certified Nursing Assistant Exam. Applicants must then submit fingerprint cards. Licenses/certificates and will not be issued without the results of a state and federal background check coming back in good standing. As prescribed by federal law, the typical Delaware CNA certificate program lasts approximately 8 to 13 weeks to gain 75 accredited hours of CNA course work and 100 hours of clinical rotation. Individual schools often have special requirements to begin training. After passing the Certified Nurse Assistant exam, you must be placed on the Delaware Nurse Aide Registry.

In Delaware, you are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours of CNA course work and 100 hours of clinical rotation before challenging the state CNA licensing exam. The nurse aide classes typically last 2-6 months. Individual schools often have special requirements to begin the training program.
