MSN Programs in Texas

Texas MSN Programs

Texas is host to a variety of MSN programs. For those who are looking to pursue an MSN program in this state, there is no shortage of options, both online and in the classroom. With all of these options, it should be easy to find one that fits an individual schedule.

While an associate's or bachelor's degree is enough to become licensed as a registered nurse, MSN programs offer the opportunity to specialize and gain valuable expertise. This expertise is likely to open doors to new career opportunities, which may come with a higher salary. Whether an individual wishes to become a nurse educator or part of administrator or to continue focusing on clinical care, attending an MSN program is a great way for Texas nurses to take a career to the next level.

Online vs. Traditional Programs

For those who prefer on-campus learning and crave interaction with instructors and fellow students, a traditional program format may be best. The University of Phoenix offers the MSN at its Dallas campus for the Informatics and Nursing/Healthcare Education Majors. Other MSN program majors are offered online. The University of Phoenix's MSN programs vary in terms of credit hours, depending on the chosen track.

For those who think an online program format may work best, there are numerous options. There are many online colleges and universities, as well as traditional universities who offer online degree programs designed for individuals with busy schedules. Western Governors University and Grand Canyon University both offer examples of accredited online MSN programs.

Western Governors University's CCNE accredited MSN program offers two different pathways: Nursing Education and Nursing Leadership. Both program curriculums consist of 38 credits and can be completed in 2-2.5 years.

Grand Canyon University (GCU) is another example of an accredited online program that can be completed from anywhere in the nation. GCU offers a variety of different master's degree programs, each with its own focus area. These MSN specialties include Clinical Nurse Specialist with an Emphasis in Adult-Gerontology, Family Nurse Practitioner, MSN with Emphasis in Health Care Informatics, and MSN with Emphasis in Nursing Education. These, among others, are great opportunities to broaden a nursing education. GCU also offers post-master's certification programs for advanced practice. Depending on the chosen pathway, the curriculum ranges from 36-53 credits includes up to 650 supervised clinical hours.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements vary, but the following is common for Texas programs:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited program
  • Official transcripts
  • Current, unencumbered RN license
  • Actively employed as RN at time of application and enrollment
  • Criminal background check
  • Admission interview

Tuition

The cost to obtain an MSN degree varies by program and is subject to change. Program cost at the University of Phoenix ranges from $20,065-$32,125. The cost of tuition to attend Western Governors University is from $9,750-$16,250, depending on how long it takes one to earn his or her degree (tuition is charged by six-month period, rather than by credit).
