Connecticut RN Salary, Wage Earnings, & Hourly Pay Scale


The average RN salary in Connecticut, according to May 2013 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), is $75,050. This is significantly more than the national average of $65,470. In the state of Connecticut, RNs with earnings in the top tenth percentile are paid more than $99,730. Those with earning above the 75th percentile make more than $88,830. RNs in this state with earnings below the 25th percentile make less than $65,120. Those with earnings in the bottom tenth percentile make less than $55,480.

Though the average RN salary in Connecticut is higher than the national average, this is more than offset by the increased cost of living here. Connecticut's cost of living is about 32 percent higher than the average for the United States. This state has the fourth highest cost of living in the country. In some areas, the discrepancy between RN salary and cost of living is less pronounced than others. On average, however, registered nurses in this state make less in relation to their cost of living than registered nurses in other parts of the country.

According to BLS data, Connecticut employed about 34,820 registered nurses as of May 2013. Of these, more than a third were employed in the Hartford metropolitan area. Hartford employed 12,640 RNs at the time this data was collected. At $74,140, the median annual salary for RNs in Hartford is very close to the overall average RN salary in Connecticut. Registered nursing salaries in this area ranged from under $54,680 to more than $94,990.

New Haven, CT is the next highest employer of RNs in the state. The average wage for RNs here is slightly higher than the rest of the state at $76,910. Salaries in this area range from under $56,950 to more than $105,340. Though the earnings are higher in this area of the state, the cost of living is also higher. It is important to consider both potential salary and expected cost of living when searching for a job.
