Online programs can be beneficial for nurses who either cannot or would prefer not to travel to a campus location for classes. These programs allow students to watch lectures and complete coursework when it fits their schedules. The University of Phoenix offers a greater variety of MSN specializations online. Students can choose from Informatics, Nursing & Healthcare Education, Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Business Administration-Health Care Management Dual Degree, and Family Nurse Practitioner. Each curriculum is made up of 39-42 credits, and a varying number of clinical hours.

Other similar online programs are offered by Capella University, Georgetown University, and a number of other colleges and universities.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements differ from one program to another, but the following are common:

  • BSN from an accredited program
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (most schools require a 3.0)
  • Unencumbered RN license
  • Official transcripts
  • TOEFL for those who do not speak English as a first language


Tuition varies by program. The University of Phoenix currently lists program cost at $20,065-$32,125. Other MSN programs may cost more or less.
