An important aspect in becoming a registered nurse is finding the right school to from which to get a nursing education. There are a variety of different RN programs in Wisconsin, offering several different degree options. Those looking to become an RN should have no trouble finding the right program to begin a career.

Becoming an RN by Examination in Wisconsin

In order to become licensed as an RN in Wisconsin, an individual must first graduate from a board-approved professional nursing program. One can become licensed either by examination or endorsement, depending on whether or not he or she has been licensed previously.

In order to become licensed by examination, one must register for and pass the NCLEX. He or she must also submit the application for licensure by examination. Along with the application, one must submit the following items:

  • Statement of Graduation or Completion from nursing school
  • Statement of Foreign Nursing Education (foreign graduates only)
  • CGFNS Certificate Required
  • Temporary permit application and fees

Applicants for licensure by examination can obtain a temporary permit for up to 90 days while awaiting NCLEX results. If the individual fails the NCLEX, the permit is no longer valid.

RNs that are educated in a foreign country must have a course-by-course credentials evaluation by CGFNS. Evidence of English proficiency is also necessary.

Becoming an RN by Endorsement in Wisconsin

In order to become licensed by endorsement, one must have completed the education requirement and passed the licensing exam (if he or she was licensed in a foreign country, he or she must have passed that licensing exam. In addition, the individual must meet the following requirements:

  • Verification of working 2 years full-time or the equivalent in the past 5 years
  • Evidence of English proficiency
  • A license that is in good standing and has had no disciplinary action
  • Having not been terminated from employment as a nurse
  • Equivalency in requirements for licensure in other state or jurisdiction
  • Lacking an arrest or conviction record
  • Renewing an RN License

    Wisconsin RN licenses must be renewed every 2 years. The licenses expire on the last day of February during even numbered years. There are no continuing education requirements.
