MSN Programs in Virginia

Virginia MSN Programs

Collegiate pursuits in general have changed greatly over the years, making it easier in some ways for students to earn degrees. The internet has allowed for computer-based learning, offering students more flexibility. MSN programs in Virginia are available online and in a traditional classroom format, so one can earn an advanced nursing degree in the manner in which he or she prefers. MSN programs are a great opportunity to further one's nursing expertise and enhance one's resume.

A master's degree in nursing will open the door to a wide range of job opportunities. While a bachelor's degree allows one to work as an RN, earning an MSN allows one to become nationally certified in an advanced practice specialization. Attending one of the various MSN programs in Virginia can lead to higher income potential and give an individual the upper hand when applying for jobs.

Online vs. Traditional Programs

Online programs allow a student to complete courses on his or her own time. This flexibility can be helpful for those who are working full-time or have a family. The coursework can be completed anywhere, as long as a computer is available. Fortunately, many MSN programs are offered online and geared toward busy, working nurses. South University and Western Governors University both offer these degrees online.

South University's online MSN program has three different specialty areas that students can choose from, with curriculums ranging from 48-52 credits, including a capstone course. The specializations are Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, and Nursing Informatics. There is also a Nurse Practitioner track, which consists of 62 credits and offers the following specialty options: Adult Health Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner.

For those who prefer a traditional classroom setting, South University also has a campus in Glen Allen, VA (near Richmond), which offers the MSN. This campus offers the 62 credit Family Nurse Practitioner specialty.

Admission Requirements

Some colleges and universities are stricter than others in terms of MSN admission requirements, but the following is common:

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited program with GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Completion of undergraduate statistics course and nursing research course with 'C' or better
  • Official transcripts
  • Current RN license
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Essay
  • Resume/CV

Tuition varies by programs, and this information is subject to change. Students at South University pay $20,928-$27,032 for tuition, excluding additional fees, depending on the track chosen.
