New York MSN Programs

MSN programs in New York are competitive degree programs for students who wish to take their nursing careers to the next level. While one can become a registered nurse with an associates or bachelor's degree, a nurse who has a master's degree can become certified in an advanced practice specialty or work in administration or education. Earning an MSN is a great start to an even more rewarding nursing career.

There are many MSN programs available in New York for nurses to look into. Applicants can choose from a number of online and on campus options. It is important to make sure the school one is applying to offers the specific area of study that he or she is interested in and that it fits his or her schedule.

Online vs. Traditional Programs

Some New York colleges and universities offer MSN programs on campus. Those who prefer a classroom setting where they can interact with instructors and fellow students might want to enroll in one of these programs. Students who do this must travel to campus to attend classes at their scheduled times.

Online programs are great option for busy nurses who do not wish to travel to classes. These programs often give the option to complete coursework 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This provides greater flexibility for those who are already on a rigid schedule. Northeastern University and Western Governors University are both examples of universities that offer accredited online MSN programs.

Northeastern University offers a Direct Entry Nursing online MSN program. This program can be entered into pre-licensure. After completing a BSN, students are required to complete 40 credit hours for an MSN. Northeastern University's online program offers an Administration/Leadership specialization. Other nursing specializations are offered at the Boston campus, but not online.

Western Governors University's MSN program offers two specialty areas: Nursing Education and Nursing Leadership. Both areas of study require students to complete 38 credits. The curriculum is designed to be completed over 2-2.5 years.
