Becoming an RN by examination in Washington, D.C.

In order to become an RN in Washington, D.C., one must first graduate from an approved registered nurse education program. An individual can become licensed either by examination or endorsement, depending on the circumstances.

In order to become licensed by examination, an individual must pass the NCLEX-RN. Those who have not taken and passed this exam within 3 years of becoming eligible must complete additional continuing education requirements. Those who fail the NCLEX are eligible to take it again after 45 days.

In addition to passing the licensing exam, one must complete and submit an application along with the following items:

  • Application Fees ($187)
  • Criminal Background Check
  • 2 Passport-type picture
  • Official transcript
  • Letter of Recommendation from Nurse Administrator
  • Foreign applicants only: CGFNS Certification
  • Screening Questions
  • License Affidavit

Becoming an RN by Endorsement in Washington, D.C.

RNs who are licensed in another state or jurisdiction can apply for licensure by endorsement. The follow items must be submitted along with the completed application:

  • 2 passport-type photos
  • Copy of legal documents supporting name change (if applicable)
  • SSN affidavit form (if applicable)
  • Verification of Licensure from original and current jurisdiction
  • Foreign-educated applicants only: Evidence of English proficiency
  • Detailed written explanation of any legal charges or disciplinary action

A Temporary permit can be obtained for an individual to be employed while waiting for his or her background check to process. The permit is valid for 90 days.

Renewing an RN License

RN licenses are valid for a 2 year period, and are renewed on June 30th of odd numbered years. After the initial renewal period, there is a 24 continuing education hour requirement in order to renew.
