MSN Programs in Missouri

Missouri MSN Programs

MSN programs in Missouri expand on the education gained from associates and bachelor's degree programs, focusing students' skills into key areas of the nursing field. These programs are a great opportunity for nurses who wish to advance in their nursing careers and to take on more responsibility. Graduates of these programs often choose to become certified in their chosen advanced practice specialty or to work in administration or education.

There are many different MSN programs that Missouri residents can choose from, so it is important to evaluate all the options before making a decision. Some of these programs may work better with an individual's schedule than others, making it easier to earn this degree. Programs are offered both online and on campus, depending on the particular college or university. The first step in a more rewarding career is to choose the right program.

Online vs. Traditional Programs

Traditional, campus-based MSN programs in Missouri are great for residents of this state that prefer to learn in a classroom environment. These lectures are taught live, and require students to travel to the location where they are offered. Benefits of these programs are that students can stop professors during lectures to ask questions, and that they allow networking between students.

Those who do not find that it is convenient or plausible to attend classes on campus can still earn an MSN through an online program. There are many accredited online programs that offer a large variety of different specialty areas. Two of these programs are offered by the University of Phoenix and Chamberlain College of Nursing.

The University of Phoenix offers the following specialties areas for students to choose from: Informatics, Nursing & Healthcare Education, Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Business Administration-Health Care Management Dual Degree, and Family Nurse Practitioner. These programs can be completed entirely online, and are available around the clock. Each specialty area has a curriculum made up of 39-42 credits as well as a clinical hour requirement.

Chamberlain College of Nursing offers two different CCNE accredited programs: an MSN and an MSN FNP program. The MSN can be completed full-time in 2 years, and the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program can be completed full-time in 2.5 years. The MSN program is offered in the following four specialty areas, and each one requires students to complete 36 credits: Educator, Executive, Healthcare Policy, and Informatics. Those on the FNP pathway must complete 45 credits. All students must complete a practicum, ranging from 100-600 hours.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements are program specific, and some programs are more exclusive and have stricter criteria for admission. Those who are applying for MSN programs in Montana are usually required to have a BSN from an accredited program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, as well as an unencumbered RN license. Students are required to submit official transcripts, as well as any other items that are specific to a particular school. Those who do not speak English as a first language must prove English proficiency.

Tuition

Program cost for the University of Phoenix ranges from $20,065-$32,125. Tuition at Chamberlain College of Nursing is listed by credit at $650 per credit hour, and at $550 per credit for alumni and military. The cost of tuition alone to complete an MSN at Chamberlain ranges from $23,400-$29,250 without taking into account the military/alumni discount.
