DNP Programs in Virginia

Virginia DNP Programs

To get to the highest education level in nursing, there are several different options. A traditional route for a nurse is to earn a PhD in a research specialty related to his or her field of interest. DNP programs in Virginia are a second option, which provides students with a wide range of different opportunities for career advancement in the healthcare field. DNP stands for Doctor of Nursing Practice, and it is a way for students who are already certified to take their studies further in order to increase his or her job opportunities. However, as this is a broad degree program, there are many different types of subjects that could be covered.

Admission Requirements

The state of Virginia has six DNP programs for an individual can choose to attend. Each program has different application requirements, but there are many similarities between them. Virginia DNP programs can ask students to submit:

  • An application for the graduate school
  • Proof that he or she has graduated from either a BSN or MSN program with a GPA of at least 3.0
  • An official transcript from the nursing program that he or she graduated from
  • Letters of recommendation
  • A written statement or essay of his or her goals for being a DNP
  • A copy of his or her RN license
  • A resume
  • A copy of his or her GRE scores
  • A criminal background check
  • Proof that he or she has health coverage
  • Verification that he or she has been tested for tuberculosis

Each program also has a different application deadline, so it is important to find out when a school's deadline is. For example, the deadlines for George Mason University are February 1 for fall consideration and November 1 for spring consideration. For Marymount University, the preferred deadline March 15 and the final deadline is May 1.

Curriculum and Degree Requirements

The requirements from each program also depend on what level of education an individual has already achieved. For example, at Marymount University, an individual who currently has a BSN must complete 72-74 credits to obtain a DNP degree, and an individual with an MSN must only complete 60-62 credits to obtain a DNP degree. On the other hand, at the University of Virginia, an individual with an MSN degree will need to earn at least 39 credits to complete the DNP program.

Tuition

The amount of money each student pays for tuition is based on which program he or she chooses and whether or not the individual lives in the state where the school is located. For example, at Radford University, instate tuition for a full year is $6,482 and out of state tuition is $15,050.
