South Carolina DNP Programs

Those looking to pursue an advanced degree in nursing should look into what the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree can offer. These degrees are designed for those individuals who are interested in advanced study of all clinical aspects of nursing, ranging from caring for patients to administration and policy. DNP programs in South Carolina will prepare nurses to take on an increased level of responsibility and leadership, and to help bridge the gap left by a decreasing number of physicians.

Admission Requirements

There are 2 schools that offer DNP programs in the state of South Carolina: Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina. Typical application requirements for these programs include:

  • Having a BSN or MSN degree
  • Having a nursing GPA of at least 3.0
  • Submitting official nursing school transcripts
  • Having passed an undergraduate statistics course
  • Holding an active RN license
  • Submitting letters of recommendation
  • Submitting a resume or CV
  • Writing an essay
  • Being interviewed by school faculty

Curriculum and Degree Requirements

Both programs have different requirements to obtain a DNP. At the University of South Carolina, for example, a DNP student must:

  • Take a minimum of 67-75 hours if he or she has a BSN or 33 hours if he or she has an MSN
  • Complete a graduate residency of at least 18 graduates hours for 3 consecutive semesters
  • Chose and complete a clinical specialty area
  • Complete a DNP final project
  • Finish the program in less than 10 years
  • Complete at least 500 clinical hours (if the individual has an MSN degree) or 1,000 hours (if the individual has a BSN degree)
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA in all required classes

DNP programs can often be at least partially completed online.
