MSN Programs in Maine

Maine MSN Programs

MSN programs in Maine are a great opportunity for nurses who want to take their careers to the next level. These programs build on the knowledge learning in an associate's or bachelor's degree program, and prepare nurses to take on more advanced roles in healthcare. Graduates of these programs often continue on to become advanced practice specialists, educators, or managers.

MSN programs in Maine are available both online and at colleges and universities. Despite many similarities, all programs are different to some extent in terms of curricula, timeframe, and the way in which a student completes classes and coursework. The first step in earning an MSN is to evaluate all the options.

Online vs Traditional Programs

There are advantages and disadvantages to both on-campus and online programs. The major advantage of traditional on-site programs is that they allow students to network with classmates and to have face-to-face contact with instructors. Some feel that this makes it easier to learn and get clarification on difficult concepts. The disadvantage is that there are few MSN programs in Maine, and each admits a small number of students. In addition, these programs require travel to campus.

The advantage to online programs is that they allow greater flexibility, making it easier for students to work full-time and earn a degree. These programs can be tailored to the schedule of each individual, rather than requiring one to change his or her schedule to fit in classes and travel. The disadvantage is that, though students are able to contact instructors, they do not have the same opportunity to speak with them and fellow students in person.

One example of an accredited MSN program that is available to Maine residents is Northeastern University. The program that this school offers online is its Direct Entry Nursing MSN, which students can enter pre-licensure. The number of credit hours required for degree completion depends on one's current education level. Graduates of this program have a degree in the Administration and Leadership specialization. Northeastern University offers additional specialty tracks at its Boston campus.

Kaplan University offers another example of an online program format. This program allows students to earn a degree in Executive Leadership, Informatics, Adult NP, Family NP, or Nurse Education. The curriculums range from 65-100 credits, depending on the chosen track.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for both online and on-campus programs vary for each college or university. Some programs are stricter than others, but there are many similarities. Most programs require students to have graduated from an accredited BSN program with a certain GPA (3.0 is common), and to submit official transcripts. Other documents that are sometimes required include resumes, letters of recommendation, and essays.

Tuition

Tuition varies between programs, and the difference from one to another can be great. This information is subject to change. Kaplan University's MSN program tuition ranges from $23,920-$36,800.
