Many sonographers will specialize in an area that has nothing to do with obstetrics, such as breast sonography. This is an important diagnostic tool and there is a major need for medical sonographers. Most students who plan to become a diagnostic medical sonographer will obtain an associate of applied science degree in this field. Southeast Technical Institute provides just such training for students in South Dakota. This program lasts for six semesters, including two summer semesters. The prerequisites for admission include medical language, anatomy physiology, anatomy physiology lab, college algebra, and applied physics. Students who are able to take college classes during their senior year of high school can get a head start for this field by enrolling in some of these required courses. A background in math and science in high school is helpful.

Courses that are included in the two-year program are computer essentials, cross sectional anatomy, composition, patient care techniques, and ultrasound physics. Students will also have several courses on specialized areas of sonography including abdominal sonography and OB/Gyn sonography. The fourth and fifth semesters of the program are dedicated to clinical rotations where the student will get hands-on experience. Upon graduation, diagnostic medical sonographers will have many employment opportunities in hospitals, clinics, and other health care settings. Those with earnings in the bottom ten percent make under $38,930 while those in the top ten percent earn over $71,350.
