How to Become a Sonography in New Mexico - Sonography Programs in New Mexico

In addition to other important areas of the healthcare field, sonography can be very vital to a patient's healthcare plan. There are a lot of things that a blood or urine test can't tell doctors for sure and that x-rays can't see. For these things, they use sonography, which is the use of sound waves in order to create an image of organs and parts of the body. Most people think of being pregnant when they think of sonography, but a patient can get sonograms on pretty much every part of their body and for various reasons. A sonographer can specialize in specific areas of sonography as well.

If you think you want to be a sonographer in the state of New Mexico, you will need to complete at least a two-year program at a community college or technical school. There are various community colleges throughout New Mexico that offer a degree program in sonography. You can also go to a college or university in New Mexico that offers the four-year degree in sonography. This is not required to enter the field though. Most of the sonographers working in New Mexico only have an associate's degree. Once you finish your degree, you will need to be certified and licensed so you can work.

A sonographer can get certified in more than one specialization if they so choose. The different specializations to pick from are: neurosonography, OB/GYN sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, breast sonography, and abdominal sonography. As you can imagine, each specialization will perform sonograms on different parts of the body. If you want to be able to market yourself better on the job search, you should get certification in at least two specializations. The more certifications a sonographer has, the better the chances are of finding a job because employers like to hire people who can do more than one thing.

If you are working as a sonographer in New Mexico, the average salary you can expect is right around $65,000, which is right on par with the national average. Of course, the more specializations you have and the longer you have been working as a sonographer will bring you more money. You should also keep in mind that a small town in New Mexico is not going to pay the same as a larger city in the same state. So, always be willing to relocate to another New Mexico city if it means that you can make more money.
