How to Become a Sonographer in Connecticut – Sonographer Programs and Information

The field of Sonography, also known as ultrasonography, is using sound waves to generate an image to be used in the diagnosis of different medical conditions. The sonographer will review the procedure with the patient, taking any notes for the patient's medical chart that needs to be recorded for relevancy. To perform the procedure, the sonographer uses a transducer that transmits sound waves in rectangle or cone-shaped beams. While small details may vary, most sonographers will prep the patient's skin with a special gel. Sonographers are trained to recognize minute anomalies by contrasting the images with healthy areas. Once a good image is captured, it is shown to the physician for diagnosis.

To become a sonographer, you must complete formal training in a 2 to 4 year program that leads to an associate or bachelor degree. Complete training can also be acquired in hospitals, vo-tech facilities, colleges or universities. Sonographers registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) are preferred due to the certification of ability on the part of the sonographer. A sonographer also needs to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

In Connecticut there are two Diagnostic Medical Sonographer schools accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center located in Hartford and Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven. You can achieve an associate's degree at Gateway Community College in New Haven, as well as train in Sonography at Fox Institute of Business in West Hartford and Sanford-Brown College-Farmington. Any one of these programs offers comprehensive training you need to succeed as a sonographer.
