There are many different colleges, universities, and nursing schools that offer the education required for becoming an RN, so potential students can pick the right one. There are even many opportunities for advancement and advanced degrees for required nurses.

Becoming an RN by Examination in Wyoming

In Wyoming, one can become licensed as an RN either by examination or endorsement. In both cases, the applicant must have completed a registered nurse education program that is approved by a state board. The exam used for licensure is the NCLEX-RN.

In order to become licensed by examination, an individual must not have committed any actions requiring disciplinary action. Once he or she has completed the education requirement, the individual must register for the NCLEX and be authorized to take the test. He or she must also submit to the board the application, fees, criminal background check, and finger print cards.

The applicant can be granted a 90 day permit with submission of an official transcript.

Becoming an RN by Endorsement in Wyoming

In order to become licensed by endorsement, in addition to the education requirements, individuals must not have committed any acts that are grounds for disciplinary action. The individual must submit the appropriate fees, background check, and fingerprint cards to the board.

A Temporary permit for up to 90 days can be obtained with proof that one's license is in good standing an another state and the submitted application an fees.

Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools

An RN who has been educated outside of the United States can become licensed in the United States regardless of whether or not he or she has already passed a board-approved exam in the United States. For one who has passed such an examination in English, he or she need only fulfill Wyoming's requirements for licensure by endorsement before obtaining a temporary nursing permit.

A foreign RN who has not yet taken a board-approved exam in the United States must:

  • Complete all requirements for licensure by examination
  • Pass a screening examination and receive a certificate as proof
  • Request an official transcript and translation, as well as verification of government approval for the program
  • Submit proof of English proficiency
  • Be at least an RN in the foreign country
  • Be scheduled for and pass a national nursing licensure examination.
  • Renewing an RN License

    An RN must renew his or her license every 2 years. The licenses renew on December 31 of all even years.

    In order to renew, an RN must fulfill one of the following requirements:

    • Worked at least 500 hours in the past 2 years or 1600 in the past 5
    • 20 continuing education hours in the past 2 years
    • Refresher course in the past 5 years
    • Certification in a specialized area by an accredited agency in the past 5 years
    • Passed the NCLEX in the past 5 years
