Becoming Licensed by Examination in Montana

In Montana, one can become licensed either by examination or endorsement. In both cases, an individual is required to have completed a board-approved nursing program.

In order to become an RN by examination, one must submit the appropriate application and $100 fee. In addition, he must register for and pass the NCLEX. Foreign educated applicants must complete the following:

  • Official course-by-course evaluation by CGFNS or IERF
  • An English proficiency exam
  • An NCLEX predictor exam from CGFNS

Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Montana

Those who have been licensed by examination previously in another state or jurisdiction can become licensed by endorsement. In order to do so, one must complete the appropriate application and pay the $200 fee. An individual must meet the following requirements in order to do so:

  • Passing score on the NCLEX or SBTPE
  • Verification of licensure from the original state
  • Verification of licensure from all states and jurisdictions where he or she has been licensed in the past 2 years
  • Foreign applicants: Official course-by-course evaluation by CGFNS or IERF, an English proficiency exam, and an NCLEX predictor exam from CGFNS
  • Renewing an RN License

    All RN licenses expire on December 31 of even numbered years. RNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education in each 2 year licensure period. There is currently a $100 renewal fee.
