Mississippi DNP Programs

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a terminal level nursing degree for those who wish to concentrate on clinical practice. It offers an alternative from the research-focused PhD. DNP programs are relatively new to the state of Mississippi. Currently the following two universities offer the DNP: The University of Southern Mississippi and University of Mississippi Medical Center. DNP programs in Mississippi offer a great opportunity for individuals looking to pursue a doctoral level nursing degree.

The common mission of Mississippi DNP programs is to take advanced practice care to its highest possible potential and prepare nurses to be leaders in healthcare. Both programs aim to improve care to diverse populations.

Curriculum and Degree Requirements

Both the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) offer a post-baccalaureate and post-master's entry-point into the DNP programs. The latter also offers a post-master's early entry pathway designed for current master's students. UMC's post-MSN curriculum is comprised of 48 credit hours, which includes a capstone project. The post-BSN option is 81 credit hours and 1200 clinical hours, including the capstone project. USM's post-MSN DNP program is a 42-25 credit curriculum.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements between the two programs bare many similarities. Applicants to these programs should expect to be subject to the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or master's from an accredited program
  • 3.2-3.5 minimum cumulative GPA
  • Acceptable GRE scores within the last 5 years
  • Unencumbered RN license and eligibility for Mississippi licensure
  • One year professional nursing experience (preferred, not required)
  • One research and one statistics course
  • Official transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • TOEFL for those who do not speak English as a first language

Tuition

Tuition varies for residents and non-residents between the two programs. General tuition for the University of Southern Mississippi is $3,372 per semester.
