Becoming Licensed by Examination in Vermont
In Vermont, one can become licensed either by examination or endorsement. An individual can apply for licensure by examination in one state only.
In order to become licensed by examination, an individual must submit the application for licensure by examination to Vermont Board of Nursing and achieve a passing score on the NCLEX licensing exam. The following items are required to be submitted with the application:
- Passport-type photo
- $90 application fee
- Verification of Education Form
- Signed, sealed copy of Transcripts
A temporary permit may be granted for up to 90 days while awaiting NCLEX results. The permit is non-renewable.
Licensure by Endorsement in Vermont
In order to become licensed by endorsement, one must hold a license in another state or jurisdiction. The individual must have either graduated in the past 5 years or worked as a nurse 400 hours in the past 2 years or 960 hours in the past 5 years. Those who graduated in the past 5 years but do not meet the work requirement must also submit a Verification of Education.
In addition to the application for licensure by endorsement, an individual must submit the following items:
- Passport-type photo
- $150 fee
- For those who practiced in private duty/volunteer capacity: an official letter must be attached documenting work
- Verification of Licensure from original state and current state of licensure
- Photocopy of current out-of-state license
- Photocopy of driver's license or other government-issued ID
Renewing an RN License
In order to renew an RN license in Vermont one must complete the practice requirement in one of the following ways:
- The individual must have as a nurse 400 hours in the past 2 years or 960 hours in the past 5 years.
- The individual must have completed a refresher course in the past 5 years.
