  • South Dakota is the individual's primary state of residence (may be granted a multi-state license).
  • The individual's primary state of residence is a non-compact state (may be granted a single state license).

In order to become licensed by examination, one must register for and pass the NCLEX-RN and submit a licensure application to the board. If he or she was previously licensed in a non-compact state, a permit must be granted prior to practicing in the new state. If he or she is from another compact state, the individual may continue practicing for 30 days on the previous state's privilege to practice.

An applicant for licensure by endorsement must submit the following items with his or her application to the board:

  • $100 Fee
  • Official Transcripts
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Verification of Original State of Licensure
  • Employment Verification (proof of at least 140 hours in an 12 month period or at least 480 hours accumulated in the past 6 years)

Being a registered nurse is a great career. But many working adults who want to become an registered nurse have an extremely busy schedule - balancing a full-time job, family commitments and other personal responsibilities. The traditional classroom setting offered by most local nursing schools doesn't offer the same flexibility as taking their RN classes online.

Online nursing programs allow each student to fit their education into his or her already busy schedule. Online students can participate in "classroom" discussions and take exams when it's convenient for them. RN nursing students can access their virtual classroom 24 hours per day / seven days per week.

Also, taking RN courses online saves students even more time, as online students don't need to commute to school. Online schools enable busy people to get an RN degree, without interfering with their current professional and personal life.
