South Carolina RN Programs

Registered nursing is an exciting and rewarding career in which there are many opportunities. RNs help patients on a daily basis and have the opportunity to earn a competitive salary. South Carolina offers many RN programs to help one begin such a career.

When it comes to choosing from the array of RN programs in South Carolina, it is important to consider the length of the program. RN programs range from 2-4 years, so those who do not want to attend a 4 year school can still become an RN. A Potential student has the ability to choose the best program to suit his or her personal preferences.

In South Carolina, one can become licensed either by examination or by endorsement. South Carolina is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, meaning that those who reside in and are licensed in another compact state can practice in South Carolina without additional licensure.

Becoming Licensed by Examination in South Carolina

In order to become licensed by examination, an individual must have graduated from an approved nursing education program. The exam used to license RNs is the NCLEX-RN. In addition to the application for licensure, an individual must submit the following items to the board:

  • Application fee
  • Recent passport-type photo
  • Copy of birth certificate or passport
  • Copy of Social Security Card or equivalent
  • Copy of any applicable name change documents
  • SC Graduates: completion date of coursework from the Dean
  • Non-SC Graduates: Official Transcript
  • Foreign Graduates: CGFNS Certification and passing TOEFL score
  • Criminal Background Check and FBI Fingerprint Cards

Becoming Licensed by Endorsment in South Carolina

Those who are residents of and licensed in a non-compact state or are licensed in another compact state but now reside in South Carolina can become licensed by endorsement. Applicants must submit the following items:

  • Recent passport-type photo
  • Copy of birth certificate or passport
  • Copy of Social Security Card or equivalent
  • Copy of current nursing license
  • Evidence of continued competence
  • Proof of residence
  • Verification of Licensure from original state
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Application Fee

Those who wish to renew an RN license must fulfill continuing education requirements to do so.

Why Online RN Classes?

Being a registered nurse is a great career. But many working adults who want to become an registered nurse have an extremely busy schedule - balancing a full-time job, family commitments and other personal responsibilities. The traditional classroom setting offered by most local nursing schools doesn't offer the same flexibility as taking their RN classes online.

Online nursing programs allow each student to fit their education into his or her already busy schedule. Online students can participate in "classroom" discussions and take exams when it's convenient for them. RN nursing students can access their virtual classroom 24 hours per day / seven days per week.

Also, taking RN courses online saves students even more time, as online students don't need to commute to school. Online schools enable busy people to get an RN degree, without interfering with their current professional and personal life.
