RN Programs in Oregon

Oregon RN Programs

Registered nurses are everywhere in the medical field, making sure that patients are well taken care of. An RN is a well trained person that enjoys helping others. For those who want to be a part of this exciting career, all one has to do is look into RN programs in Oregon.

When exploring RN programs in Oregon, one should note the amount of time it takes to complete each one. An associate's degree is a simple two year program, while some RN programs lead to a bachelor's degree, which is a four year program. There are also options to specialize or obtain advanced degrees.

Becoming Licensed by Examination in Oregon

In Oregon, one can become licensed either by examination or by endorsement. An Oregon license is necessary for practice in this state. In order to become licensed, one must first have completed a state-approved nursing education program. A background check is also required of all applicants.

The exam used to license RNs is the NCLEX. In order to become licensed by examination, one must pass this exam and submit an application to the Oregon Board of Nursing, along with the $160 fee.

Those who were educated in a foreign country and have not yet been licensed by examination in the United States must also submit a CGFNS Certificate or VISA-Screen. Documentation of English proficiency is also required.

Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Oregon

In order to become licensed by endorsement, one must already have been licensed in another state or jurisdiction. Nurses must already have passed the NCLEX or SBTPE. Verification of original and current licensure must be submitted to the board.

Those applying for licensure by endorsement must fulfill the continued competency requirement of working 960 hours in the past 5 years. This requirement is waived if the individual graduated in the past 5 years or completed a re-entry program within the past 2 years. Those educated outside of the U.S. must also submit a CGFNS Certificate or VISA-Screen. Documentation of English proficiency is also required.

Renewing an RN License

RN licenses must be renewed every 2 years. In order to be eligible for renewal, one of the following must be true:

  • The individual worked as an RN for 960 hours in the past 5 years.
  • The individual completed a re-entry program in the past 2 years.
  • The individual graduated from a board-approved nursing program in the past 5 years.
