Becoming Licensed by Examination in New Hampshire

In order to become an RN in New Hampshire, one must first have completed an approved nursing education program consisting of at least 1080 hours of sufficient classroom and clinical training.

To become licensed by examination, an individual must complete the following steps after graduating from a nursing program:

  • Complete FBI Criminal Background Check and pay required fee
  • Complete and submit the NH Application for Licensure by Examination
  • Complete and submit the Application for Temporary License (if applicable)
  • Have the school's Office of Registrar submit official transcript
  • Register for the NCLEX ($200 fee), obtain ATT, and schedule exam (individual must pass to become licensed)

Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in New Hampshire

An individual can become licensed by endorsement if he or she is licensed in another state or jurisdiction and completes the appropriate application. In addition, he or she must submit verification of original licensure. One is eligible for licensure by endorsement in New Hampshire if one of the following is true:

  • He or she has practiced as a nurse for at least 400 hours in the past 4 years and completed at least 30 continuing education contact hours in the past 2 years
  • He or she passed the licensing exam within the past 2 years

New Hampshire is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. Those who reside in another compact state cannot apply for licensure in New Hampshire, but can obtain multi-state privilege in the state of residence.

Renewing an RN License

In order to be eligible for renewal, one must complete at least 30 continuing education contact hours in the 2 year renewal period and have practiced as a nurse for at least 400 hours in the past 4 years. In the latter is not true, he or she must have passed the NCLEX or completed a refresher course in the past 2 years.
