There are many different RN programs in Missouri to choose from based on an individual’s needs, career goals, and financial aid opportunities. These programs range from 2 years to 4 years, offering various degrees. After the initial RN degree, one can continue on to specialize or earn an advanced degree.
Becoming Licensed by Examination in Missouri
In Missouri, one can become licensed either by examination or endorsement. Missouri is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. Due to the fact that this is a compact state, one can apply for licensure in Missouri only if he or she resides in this state or a non-compact state. One who resides in a compact state must be licensed in his or her primary state of residence.
In order to become licensed by examination, an individual must pass the NCLEX upon graduating from an approved nursing education program. One must complete the application (signed and notarized) for licensure by examination and submit it to the board, along with the following items:
- Signed passport-type photo
- $45 fee
- Criminal background check
- In case of any crimes, misdemeanors, or disciplinary action: certified court documents and notarized statements explaining any incidents
Graduates of foreign nursing schools who wish to become licensed by examination must have completed a nursing program at least equivalent to those offered in Missouri. Applicants must also have social security numbers.
Graduates of approved nursing programs can obtain a 90 day practice permit while awaiting NCLEX scores.
Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Missouri
Those who have been licensed in another state or jurisdiction can become licensed by endorsement. One must submit a completed application, signed and notarized, along with the following items:
- $55 fee
- Copy of out-of-state nursing license
- Criminal background check
- Official final transcript from nursing school
- License Verification from original state of licensure
- In case of any crimes, misdemeanors, or disciplinary action: certified court documents and notarized statements explaining any incidents
- Foreign education applicants: CGFNS credentials evaluation
Applicants for licensure by endorsement can obtain a temporary permit. The permit is valid for 6 months and cannot be extended. Missouri grants one permit per lifetime.
Renewing an RN License
RN licenses are valid for 2 years, and expire on April 30th of odd numbered years.
