The Women and Minorities of Science and Engineering

For a long time, there was a shortage of women and minorities in the fields of science and engineering. Traditionally, these fields were mostly dominated by white men, because women and minorities were more interested in other academic pursuits, such as arts and humanities, business, law, education, and others. Besides the lack of interest, women and minorities were also not confident that they would do well in science and technology-oriented fields.

As technology becomes more relevant in the modern world, there seems to be a steady increase in the number of women and minorities who are opting for science and engineering-related careers. The increasing dependence on computer makes technological knowledge more indispensable and appealing to modern people. As women and minorities become more familiar with technological concepts and usages, they are discovering that science and engineering fields are not as difficult as they appeared to be.

A more diverse gender and racial representation in science and engineering will have a significant impact on innovation as well as productivity. The different personalities and cultures of women and minorities will result in new working methods and concepts that will ultimately lead to a more competitive working environment, and possibly more technological breakthroughs. Additionally, an increase in the number of women and minorities in science and engineering will also create a more extensive mentoring network for future students and practitioners in these fields.
