Wyoming LPN Training

With today's economy, it may seem like the number of employment options is dwindling. An individual who has a limited education might feel trapped in a job that he or she does not like because there are so few options that match his or her experience. For some, the answer to this negative employment cycle is Wyoming LPN training. One year of training can open the door to an exciting new career. Wyoming LPN training is a specialized educational course that will allow one to gather the skills and experience needed to work as a licensed practical nurse. These days, health care facilities are struggling to keep up with the increased demand of an aging population. Doctors and nurses are scrambling to provide the same high level of care to all their patients, and rely on the support services of LPNs and other medical assistants to ensure patient comfort during treatment.

Becoming an LPN in Wyoming

In order to become an LPN in Wyoming, one must first complete the education program in preparation for becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. Following graduation, the individual has a 5 year period during which he or she can take and pass a national licensure examination. The maximum amount of times for taking the exam is 10.While waiting for exam results, a graduate of an approved nursing program can apply for a graduate temporary permit that is valid for 90 days and non-renewable. If the student does not pass the exam, the permit ceases to be valid. Once a permit is issued, the individual is considered a Graduate Practical Nurse (GPN). An LPN who has been educated outside of the United States can become licensed in the United States regardless of whether or not he or she has already passed a board-approved exam in the United States. For one who has passed such an examination in English, he or she need only fulfill Wyoming's requirements for licensure by endorsement before obtaining a temporary nursing permit. A foreign LPN who has not yet taken a board-approved exam in the United States must:
  • Complete all requirements for licensure by examination
  • Pass a screening examination and receive a certificate as proof
  • Request an official transcript and translation, as well as verification of government approval for the program
  • Submit proof of English proficiency
  • Be at least an LPN in the foreign country
  • Be scheduled for and pass a national nursing licensure examination

Renewing an LPN License

An LPN must renew his or her license every 2 years. If a license is allowed to expire for 60 days, the individual becomes inactive. An individual who wishes to renew or reinstate his or her license must complete continued competency requirements. He or she must submit proof of having worked as a nurse 1600 hours in the last 5 years or 500 hours in the past two years. If this is not possible, the person must do one of the following in the past 5 years:
  • Complete and submit proof of a 4 week refresher course or the equivalent, including at least 60 theoretical hours and 80 clinical hours
  • Complete an orientation program by a prospective employer that is at least 8 weeks in length and at least 160 hours of clinical practice
  • Successfully complete a nursing education program beyond the basic level
  • Become certified in a specialty area by a nationally recognized professional accrediting agency
  • Pass a national nursing licensure exam
  • Complete 20 continuing education hours in the past 2 years
