Becoming an LPN in Colorado

In Colorado, the Nurse Practice Act dictates that no one may work as an LPN in Colorado without a Colorado License or temporary permit. An individual may either become licensed by examination or by endorsement.

An individual should apply to become licensed by examination if he or she meets one of the following requirements:

He or she has completed an LPN training program but is not licensed as an LPN in another state or territory
  • He or she was educated as an LPN outside the United States, and is not licensed in another state or territory
  • An individual should apply to become licensed by endorsement if he or she is already licensed as a RN or LPN in another state or territory.

The Colorado Board of Nursing may issue a permit to practice as a practical or professional nurse for a period not exceeding two years (or as determined by the Board) to an individual from another state or territory of the United States or a foreign country who is in Colorado for special training or for observation of nursing educational programs, providing such person is currently licensed to practice as a nurse in the state, territory, or country of residency.
