Sonography is the technology that is used to provide diagnostic imaging to doctors that can help determine treatment plans for patients. A sonographer uses equipment that uses sound waves to create an image of the inside of a personís body. In order to become a sonographer in Oklahoma, a person must pass an exam in sonography by one of two accrediting agencies. These organizations are the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. These organizations offer credentials for sonographers who pass the exam after receiving formal training at an accredited institution.
To become a sonographer in Oklahoma, there are a few different pathways one can take. There are certification programs, diplomas or degrees that can be earned. Certificates can be earned from institutions such as Moore Norman Technology Center in Oklahoma City and Norman in as little as one to two years. Sonographers can also take specialty certifications such as Abdominal, OB, Vascular and breast. These specialty areas require additional knowledge that pertains to this area of the body. After a student has completed the required coursework and clinical work, they are able to take the exam through either accreditation organization.
Taking the pathway towards becoming a sonographer in Oklahoma by obtaining an associated degree can be done at a community college such as Oklahoma City Community College in 24 months. Either a certificate or an associate degree can be earned at this institution. A bachelor degree can be earned in four years at universities such as University of Oklahoma. Bacone College offers the choice between an associate degree and a bachelor degree in sonography. This allows the student to complete the pathway that best suits their need to join the workforce.
Much like other radiologic technicians, a sonographer must complete continuing education units in order to remain certified with the accrediting organization. A criminal background check is required to obtain certification in sonography in Oklahoma that shows no felony or misdemeanor charges on the applicantís record. After completing the necessary requirements to take the exam, and successful completion and passing the sonography exam, the applicant will become certified. This will open many doors to possible job opportunities. A sonography can work in a medical, hospital or clinic setting to perform sonography that assists physicians in diagnosing conditions and illnesses in patients. They work with physicians when performing a sonograph test and follow the orders given by the doctor.
