Oregon BSN Programs – The Basics of a BSN
Earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is widely accepted to be the best entry point for a career in the nursing profession. Over two million people currently work as nurses, and although the number continues to grow there always seems to be a shortage. BSN programs in Oregon provide you with an education that allows you to provide the best possible care to your patients. And employers look more favorably on those holding a Bachelor’s Degree, too. Some nursing positions require a Bachelor’s Degree, such as nursing anesthetists or midwives. Administration positions are usually filled by those with a BSN, as well. In short, a BSN will help open numerous career doors for you.
Earning a BSN involves four years of education. The requirements to enroll in BSN programs in Oregon varies, but usually a good GPA around 3.0 and several basic class credits in chemistry, biology, and psychology are needed. The first portion of the program usually focuses on core classes needed to become a nurse. More chemistry, anatomy, nutrition, and other classes are taken along with classes that touch on the basics of the nursing profession. These classes provide a foundation that the rest of your education will build upon. Once they are complete, your education will begin to focus mainly on nursing techniques and theories.
The latter half of BSN programs in Oregon feature a heavy emphasis on medical principals. You’ll learn to efficiently assess a patient’s well being, provide support and consultation to families, and more. Communication and leadership skills are honed. A great deal of time will also be spent in labs, learning all of the techniques that you will use as a nurse. Drawing blood, administering injections, setting up IV drips, and much more will be taught. Most programs involve clinic duties in addition to lab work, allowing you to learn your nursing skills in a medical setting. The combination of theoretical principals and technical skills will give you the confidence and toolset needed to excel as a nurse.
Upon graduation from BSN programs in Oregon, you will still need to take one final step before becoming a nurse. The licensing exam is required to become an RN, but the skills you learn earning your BSN will make the test a simple matter to pass. With your license in hand along with a Bachelor’s Degree, you will be qualified to fill a wide variety of nursing positions, both providing bedside care or in a more administrative function. Your patients will benefit from your depth of knowledge and your career will grow thanks to the high level of respect that employers place on having a BSN. In other words, earning a BSN is an investment in your future and in the well being of your patients.
