Becoming Licensed by Examination in Michigan
In Michigan, one can become licensed either by examination or endorsement. The first step in licensure is to complete an approved nursing education.
In order to become licensed by examination, one must pass the NCLEX licensing exam. In addition, one must complete the appropriate application along with the following items:
- Criminal Background Check
- Michigan Nursing School Certification form and final transcript for out-of-state graduates
- Foreign Graduates: CES Professional Report by CGFNS or CGFNS Certification (if licensed in another country, but not another state, verification of license must be submitted from that state
- Canadian Graduates: Transcripts and current verification of Canadian license (CGFNS certification if not taught in English)
The NCLEX must be taken within 2 years of graduation. Those who are not successful in passing the NCLEX within 12 months of the first attempt or in 3 tries must complete a review course. After 6 failures, one must complete an entire RN program.
Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Michigan
An individual can become licensed by endorsement in Michigan if his or her education is found to be equivalent to that approved in the state, and if he or she has passed the NCLEX or SBTPE. The applicant must complete a criminal background check and have verification of licensure sent from the current state in which he or she is licensed. Those who were educated in a foreign country must obtain a CES Professional Report by CGFNS or CGFNS Certification.
Renewing an RN License
Michigan RN licenses are valid for 2 years. One must complete at least 25 contact hours of continuing education in each renewal period.
