Which Schools offer Forensic Nursing Programs?

The forensic nursing profession is still a fairly new industry. Because of this the number of schools who offer the program, or a comparable one, are limited. Luckily, there are enough online and offline schools that offer forensic nursing programs that you have a good selection to choose from. Kaplan University offers a forensic nursing certificate that provides students with knowledge and skills in the science, legal, and psychosocial areas of the field. The certificate takes about 12 months to complete. However, for students who want to get into a career faster than that, they do have an accelerated option that can be completed in four months.

Another school that has forensic nursing programs available is Monmouth University located in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Their forensic nursing certificate is designed to be completed after the student has obtained a bachelor’s degree. The program is 21 credits and designed to be completed within one year. The types of classes students can expect to take include Forensic Pathology, Interpersonal Violence, and Advanced Health Assessment. The school also has a complete nursing department where students can earn a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate in nursing. To enter the forensic nursing program, you must be an RN.

Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland offers a post degree certificate in forensic nursing. This program prepares students to provide comprehensive forensic assessments and care to victims of intentional and non-intentional injury and disasters. Their forensic nursing programs was designed according to the published research and forensic practices and standards outlined by the International Association of Forensic Nurses. To enter the program, students must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing, be licensed as an RN, a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 and pass a criminal background check. Interested students should contact the school directly for other required items.

The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University in New York offers a graduate certificate in forensic health. It is a new program and only requires that the student complete 9 credits (three 3 credit classes) to obtain this certificate. Classes include Forensic Health Essentials which provides an overview of forensics, Forensic Health of Victims which discusses health issues as they related to violent crimes, and Forensic Health of Offenders, which looks at health issues regarding offenders.
