Where to Get a Job as an LPN?

If you are looking at becoming an LPN or just graduated from an LPN program, you may be wondering where exactly you can expect to find work. Even though there are not as many job opportunities for LPNs as there are for RNs, there are still plenty of places that are looking to hire LPNs. You just have to know the right places to look while you are on your LPN job hunt.

Most LPNs work at nursing homes. Nursing homes are always in need of LPNs. Other than the nurse assistant, the LPN is pretty much the only nurse that the patients and residents of nursing homes see. The LPN works directly under an RN, but the RN is more of a charge nurse who is in charge of everything while the LPN is the one who deals with the patients and their families on a regular basis. Being an LPN in a nursing home is a very rewarding career as, many times, you are the only visitor the patient will get. You will sort of become like their family. Of course, on the flip side, you will have a lot of things to deal with like difficult patients, difficult family members and death. All of these issues happen on a regular basis in a nursing home, so you need to be prepared if you want to be an LPN in one.

Some LPNs find work in home health. This type of work is appealing to those who do not want to work in a steady setting on a daily basis. LPNs who work in home health will have a certain number of patients that they will see at different times throughout the week or month. There is a lot of travel involved in working in home health, so the home health LPN has to be comfortable driving for extended periods of time and having to be at patients’ houses at certain times. You will have to be able to manage your time wisely if you are going to be a home health LPN.

There are several other places where LPNs can find work: jails, prisons, schools, clinics, hospices and even doctor’s offices. While the pay is not as good as that of the RN, being an LPN is a very rewarding career and there is a strong need for them in the healthcare industry. Just about every medical facility has several LPNs on their staff so just look at the want ads and you are sure to find an LPN position to suit your needs.
