When is Overtime Pay for Nurses Paid by Their Employers?
In the nursing career field, overtime is pretty much a guaranteed part of the work experience. While there are some states that have imposed limits and standards on overtime for nurses, many nurses find themselves working many overtime hours every week. Unlike most other professions, the time in which a nurse will begin getting overtime pay can vary. However, the rate of pay is generally the same, one and a half times the amount of the hourly wage each hour.
The way in which your overtime pay begins to accrue varies by state and can also vary by place of employment. Most states have laws in place to dictate overtime pay, but some places have their own better policies that they use. It can also vary by how your shifts are divided up. For instance, in some places, if you work eight hour shifts, you do not begin accruing overtime hours until after you have worked 40 hours in one week. However, if you work 12 hour shifts, you generally do not begin accruing overtime hours until you have worked a total of 80 hours in two weeks. In the first scenario, if you work 45 hours in one week, you will have 5 hours of overtime for that pay period. In the second scenario, you will have to work 80 hours in 14 days before you would see any overtime pay.
Of course, not everyone wants to work a lot of overtime hours, even if the pay is very good. Everyone needs time off and nurses are no exception. Some states have laws that strictly limit the amount of time a nurse can work overtime hours. These laws also state that the employers can’t take any action against a nurse who refuses to work overtime. Many times, the nurse will agree to put in the extra hours because the pay is so good, but there have been times when a nurse has been reprimanded and even fired for not agreeing to work overtime. Those few states make it so the nurse does not have to worry if they do not want to put in extra hours.
When you work overtime hours, it is very important for you to keep track of the extra hours you worked. That way you can be sure to get paid all of the overtime money you are due on your paycheck. Be sure to look at your check closely and ensure all of your overtime hours are accounted for. You would be amazed at how many times there have been arguments over overtime pay.
