Delaware RN Salary, Wage Earnings, & Hourly Pay Scale

According to data collected in May of 2013 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Delaware employed 9,740 of the approximately 2,711,500 registered nurses employed nation-wide. The average RN salary in Delaware at that time was $70,280 per year or $33.79 per hour, which is slightly higher than the national average of $65,470 per year.

Though the average RN salary in Delaware is higher than the national average, the cost of living in this state is also above average. The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) reported in 2012 that Delaware's cost of living index was about seven percent above the national average, which is consistent with slight salary elevation. RN salaries in this state range from under $52,930 to more than $91,520. These differences are most likely due to varying levels of education and experience. Pay is also likely to be greater for some employers than for others.

The RN salary in Delaware is higher in more populous metropolitan areas, as is true in many states. The Wilmington metropolitan division employed approximately 7,910 RNs in May 2013. The average RN salary here was reported to be higher than the state average at $72,410. Salaries in this area range from below $55,090 to upwards of $92,430. According to the state of Delaware, the cost of living in Wilmington is about 11 percent above the national average. In 2012, Forbes reported that the national average and the average home price was $199,000.

In other parts of the state, the RN salary is much lower. In Dover, the average registered nurse earned just $60,750 in May of 2013. This is below the national average. The Dover area employed 1,100 RNs at this time. Though the cost of living is lower in Dover than in Wilmington, it is still about three percent above the national average.
