New York DNP Programs
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a terminal level nursing degree that focuses on clinical practice. New York is among more than 5 states with the most DNP programs in the country. Currently, there are 12 programs in this state. This number is likely to grow in the future, as the AACN is pushing to move from the MSN to the DNP as the minimum level of education for advanced practice.
New York DNP programs share a common mission. They aim to promote excellence in advanced practice nursing, and to prepare graduates to be leaders in the increasingly complex healthcare industry through clinical care, administration, and policy.

Curriculum and Degree Requirements
There is some variation between New York DNP programs in terms of program entry-points and curricula. Some programs, such as those offered at Columbia University, Binghamton University, and the University at Buffalo, have a program that admits both post-BSN and post-MSN applicants. The University at Buffalo's DNP program is fairly new, having only begun in 2011. The post-baccalaureate program can be completed in 3 years of full-time study and in up to 7 years of part-time study. The post-master's program can be completed part-time in 5 semesters, and courses can be completed online. The post-MSN curriculum is comprised of 36 credits, but additional courses must be completed by post-BSN students.
Another example of multiple entry-points, Binghamton University's DNP curriculum is made up of core credits, electives, specialty courses, and a Capstone project. Post-MSN students must complete 35-38 credits in order to earn the DNP. The post-BSN program consists of 77 credits.
Other colleges and Universities, including New York University, admit only students who have already earned a master's degree. Though there is only one entry-point, New York University offers a full-time and part-time option. The part-time option is new, and allows students to complete courses over 3 years and 7 semesters. The curriculum consists of a minimum of 40 credits, and requires completion of a Capstone project and internship.
Tuition
Cost varies depending on the program and the applicant's state of residency, and is subject to change. It can be difficult to compare tuition, as some colleges and universities list the cost per credit, and others estimate cost per year or semester. The estimated cost per academic year to attend the University at Buffalo's DNP program is about $42,000 for residents and about $53,000 for non-residents. New York University currently charges $1,450 per credit for tuition.
