Becoming Licensed by Examination in Louisiana

In Louisiana, one cannot practice nursing without being licensed. In order to become licensed by examination, one must first complete an approved education program. He or she must also submit the application for licensure by examination and the following items:

  • Bureau of Criminal Identification Forms
  • 2 Fingerprint Cards
  • Any applicable fees
  • Passport type photo
  • NCLEX-RN Registration (must pass to become licensed)
  • Excelsior College Graduates: Web verification from LSBPNE
  • Official transcript sent directly from nursing school to the board

Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Louisiana

Those who have been licensed by examination in another state or jurisdiction can apply for licensure by endorsement. In order to do so, the individual must submit the appropriate application and fees as well as the following:

  • Proof of initial RN license
  • Proof of current RN license
  • Proof of having completed an approved nursing education program (out-of-state graduates must prove equivalency)
  • Proof of having passed the SBTPE or NCLEX previously
  • Detailed, written explanations of any disciplinary action, arrests, or criminal charges
  • Foreign educated graduates äóñ proof of English proficiency
  • Criminal background check

An applicant for licensure by endorsement must submit a Verification of Licensure Form for his or her original and current state of licensure.
