How to Become a Phlebotomy in Maryland - Phlebotomy Programs in Maryland

Phlebotomy is one of those areas of healthcare that we will likely always need. It is the phlebotomist who collects blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples to be analyzed in the lab to find out the health issues affecting a patient. Not only do phlebotomists collect the samples, sometimes they are the ones who analyze the findings. They then report those findings to the doctor who determines your course of medical treatment as a result of those findings. The healthcare field could not function properly if it were not for phlebotomists.

If you want to become a phlebotomist in Maryland, you will need to earn your bachelor's degree. It is recommended that you get a bachelor's degree in a scientific or healthcare field, but it is not necessary as long as you take all of the required science, math, and basic healthcare classes as part of your undergraduate education. After earning that degree, you will be eligible to apply for admittance into a phlebotomy program. Your training to be a phlebotomist will take approximately a year before you will be able to go for your certification and licensure exams. Not all states require certification or licensure, but it is highly recommended since a lot of employers are requiring both these days.

The salary for the phlebotomist is very good. On the average, phlebotomists in the United States bring in $47,000 a year. Your salary could be more or less depending on your level of experience in the field, your level of education, where you work, and the region in which you live. As a phlebotomist, you can expect to find work in private doctor's offices, hospitals, health departments, and even specialty clinics. As you can imagine, each of those places would pay very differently from the others on the list. Keep in mind that phlebotomists who work in hospitals will work more than those in other places.

The field of phlebotomy is well suited for those who love science and love to analyze things. If you love looking at things to try to figure out what is the issue causing it or to find out what is wrong with something or someone, then this is definitely a career to consider. It can be very rewarding and, even though you will be doing largely the same things day in and day out, it is rarely ever boring or mundane. That is what makes this career so great: everyday can be a very good day.
