The Differences Between Online and Traditional Nursing Programs

A nursing career is a satisfying career path, but it is a rigorous path that brings with it a lot of high pressure demands and a lot of educational requirements. As far as nursing programs go, universities and institutes offer both online as well as traditional (located in a physical university setting) nursing programs.
Online nursing programs are a relatively new phenomenon that have popped up with increasing frequency since the Internet began to get more popular in the last 10 to 15 years. It is necessary to stress that nursing degrees that are obtained through (online LPN programs) and online RN programs are just as valid as degrees that are earned through traditional degree programs. That said, an online nursing program is inherently different from a traditional nursing program and vice versa.
Furthering Your Education at Home
One aspect of an online nursing program, whether it’s an online LPN program or an online RN program, is that it provides nursing students with more favorable options regarding their nursing education. For example, people who take an online nursing program have the option to increase their credentials without compromising their jobs. If people who want to take an online nursing program are already employed as nurses or in a position in the medical field, they can study and do the required coursework from home during the evening, night and weekends, while still keeping their day jobs. The big point of attraction for an online nursing program is the flexibility, which allows a nursing student to plan his or her schedule according to his or her own convenience. Years ago, there was no flexibility, and the only option for people and nurses looking to advance their careers was a traditional nursing program. In more recent years, thanks to the continued advancement of technology and the Internet and popular demand, more online nursing programs are being created, much to the relief of professional nurses who want career mobility and still want to pay attention to their home lives.
Educational Pathways
Nursing occupations are in such demand nowadays that many nursing institutes offer both traditional as well as online nursing programs. Nurse jobs are available to people whether they graduate from online programs or traditional programs, and online nursing programs offer people a wide range of degrees that range from Bachelor’s Degrees to Master’s Degrees and Associate’s Degrees to Post-doctorate Degrees. Nursing schools that give students the option of an online program sometimes offer them under the name of nursing bridge courses. The term “bridge” refers to a track that allows a nurse to become a registered nurse after only starting out the degree as a licensed practical nurse.
Traditional Programs
A traditional nursing program, on the other hand, is taught inside of a traditional classroom setting at a physical university; usually, this physical university or institute is also the same place where students apply to complete an online nursing program. As a result of this atmosphere, the nursing students in a traditional nursing program have the distinct advantage of being able to interact with their instructor or professor, which brings an advantage over a person who is taking a nursing program over the Internet at their computer. Interacting with their professor permits nursing students to ask questions directly and, thus, receive clarifications and answers to any issues that they may have with the coursework. People who are taking an online nursing course are not going to have an instructor present in real-time before them, whom they can ask a question and from whom they can receive an answer or clarification right away. Another benefit for students in a program at a physical university is the wealth of access they enjoy to on-site resources for better learning.
Other differences exist between online nursing programs and more traditional nursing programs that take place in a classroom setting. However, some of these differences work out to distinct disadvantages from the standpoint of people taking traditional nursing degrees. For instance, there is a shortage among qualified nurses in the healthcare field, and this means that there are also fewer qualified nurse instructors in traditional nursing programs at universities. Similarly, there is also a shortage of traditional nursing programs, and this is seen in the infrequency of the times in a year that such programs run.
Online Nursing Programs
There are also advantages for students who are enrolled in an online nursing program. The biggest benefit of such online nursing programs is the convenience and flexibility that they provide to students. For example, they allow students to start anytime, as opposed to traditional nursing programs that start at set times during the year, and there is also no restriction on the number of students that an online program accepts. The limit on the number of students is one of the biggest problems with a traditional nursing program, as limited resources inside universities—chairs, desks, equipment, etc.—do not allow for as many people to get in as online nursing programs do. Because of this convenience, an online nursing program is ideal for people who want to balance their personal and professional lives in a successful way.
Continuing Education
Nurses who want to study nursing and become nurses, or those who are already professional nurses and want to advance in their careers, have two choices when it comes to taking nursing program courses. They can either take online nursing programs, or they can take traditional nursing programs, both of which have their own pros and cons. An online nursing program is viewed with the same legitimacy that a nursing program being offered in a traditional setting is, which is a change from just some years ago, when traditional nursing programs dominated the scene. While a traditional nursing program has its own benefits like live instructors that can take questions, it also has drawbacks such as a shortage of such programs during the year. Online nursing programs, though, have greater flexibility and convenience because they accept a limitless number of students, can be started anytime in the year, and work around the schedule of the person taking the program.
