LPN to BSN Online Degree Programs

There are around 700,000 people working as licensed practical/vocational nurses in the United States. Like all nursing positions, LPN and LVN nurses are overseen by each state’s individual board of nursing. The state board approves candidates for eligibility to take the licensing exam and become an LPN/LVN. This is an entry level position for nurses though some LPN’s can supervise nurse assistants or orderlies. LPNs are most often employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, or in home health care. The job requirements follow along the basic duties of nursing. Once in this position, online BSN degree programs make it easier to move up in the profession of nursing. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing can qualify an LPN to sit for the RN (registered nurse) exam, a position which increases responsibilities and income.

Online BSN degree programs aimed at licensed practical nurses or licensed vocational nurses are usually called LPN-to-BSN programs. General education courses, basic classes in science, nursing credits, and clinical work are all included in most LPN-BSN degree curriculum plans. Sample classes might include courses that emphasize nursing science and theory in the following areas: mental health nursing, adult nursing care, pediatric nursing care, health assessment and medication administration.

There can also be statistics, writing, specific science courses in biology, anatomy, physiology and chemistry as well as other liberal arts courses. Programs that help an LPN earn an online BSN degree can last from two to four years, depending on school requirements. Online program formatting allows flexibility so that students can continue to work full time as an LPN or LVN while they work toward their degree. At completion of the program, the graduate then applies to the state board of nursing for Authorization to Take the Test (ATT) in order to take the licensing exam to become a registered nurse (RN). In the packet with the ATT, the licensing candidate can find a list of locations for testing and a schedule with testing dates. Simply call and schedule the exam.

The RN licensing exam is called the NCLEX-RN. It is a computerized adaptive test. This means that as the student takes the test, the computer is assessing how they are doing. Once they have reached a certain point, if the outcome of the test is certain (either passing or failing) the test ends and the results are given. If it is still too close to call, the computer will continue to generate questions. Once licensed, registered nurses can begin working.
