Different Types of Online Doctoral Nursing Programs

Any type of doctoral program can take years to complete. Nursing is no exception. If you would like to get your doctorate, you can expect to spend four to six years before you complete the program. This is a significant time commitment for anyone to make, but it is particularly hard for those with families or demanding jobs. If you would like to get your degree but do not want to commute regularly for the next four to six years consider enrolling in one of the doctoral nursing programs online. These programs might not be right for everyone but they can be a good choice if you are highly motivated and independent.

A Doctor of Nursing Practice or DNP, is the best choice if you would like to become an executive in the health care industry. This type of program prepares students for leadership positions in a variety of fields including clinical care delivery, research and system management. A DNP is the highest degree a nurse can get without becoming a PhD. If you choose to enroll in one of the many doctoral nursing programs online you will learn how to manage fiscal responsibility and patient care.

Many nurses choose to take ND (Doctor of Nursing) doctoral nursing programs online. This degree can take anywhere from three to five years to complete depending on the school and your motivation. An ND generally enhances the skills you may have learned as an Advanced Practice Nurse. With a Doctor of Nursing degree you will continue to specialize in advanced techniques. This degree differs from a PhD in that it does not focus on research but rather focuses on clinical practice. If you wish to combine clinical practice with research, you might want to consider pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc) degree instead.

Doctor of Nursing Philosophy (PhD) doctoral nursing programs offered online will help to prepare you for positions in academia and will help you to learn valuable research skills. Doctor of Nursing Philosophy programs will also teach you how to formulate public policy. When it comes to getting your PhD you have many different options. You may choose to get your PhD after getting a Master of Science in Nursing, which is one of the more popular options. Some colleges offer a BSN to PhD accelerated program which allows you to bypass a Master’s degree entirely. This type of program is hard to find, but can be a good choice for those who do not want to spend an extra two years getting a PhD.
