Choosing a Campus Based or Online Forensic Nursing College

Forensic nursing is a field that requires extensive training and education. Certified Forensic Nurses must be able to recognize the signs of abuse, collect evidence, and testify in court. This profession requires a thorough understanding of both medicine and the legal system. You may not need an advanced degree to get a job in this field; however, as Certified Forensic Nurses gain recognition, jobs are starting to require advanced degrees and certifications. Choosing the right forensic nursing college can help your career in many ways. Unfortunately, choosing the right school for you can be difficult.

There are several things you should consider before choosing a forensic nursing college. No matter which school you attend, you will need to have your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) as well as a current RN license for the state in which you wish to practice. Some schools may have additional requirements; you will need to check before you can apply. You will also need to consider whether you want to attend a traditional program or take an online course instead. Expect your program to last roughly two years no matter which type you choose.

A classroom environment is best for those who prefer face-to-face interaction and do not mind traveling if necessary. Keep in mind that many of these programs are quite time-consuming. Some programs may be more flexible than others. Top schools in this category include Boston College, Xavier University and John Hopkins University. Boston College and John Hopkins University are both excellent research institutions in addition to their other advantages. Some programs with concentrations in forensic nursing offer hands-on training in a variety of areas. Some of these areas include death investigating, child abuse, sexual assault and abuse of the elderly. Xavier University is a forensic nursing college with similar courses, but it also offers classes in consulting for those who may be interested.

Online courses can be challenging. You will need to be highly independent and self-motivated if you want to be successful in this type of learning environment. You will need to be proactive as it may take instructors a while to answer your questions. This type of environment works well if you need to fit classes around a busy work schedule. If you are searching for an online forensic nursing college, try Fitchburg State College or the University of California-Riverside. Fitchburg offers an MSN degree, while the University of California-Riverside offers a certification in forensic nursing.
