How to Become an EMT-Paramedic in Indiana – EMT-Paramedic Programs in Indiana

Many people never think of paramedics until there is an accident, and then they are grateful to have their help. An EMT, or emergency medical technician, specializes in crisis medicine and this can involve everything from the most basic medical practices to trauma and wound care. For those who have ever been interested in this field, there is a lot of work involved, and it takes a certain type of person to succeed. Not only must the EMT be prepared to deal with stressful situations in which decisions must be made with incredible quickness and clarity, there is a lot of training involved as well.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the field of EMT or Paramedic medicine requires formal training. There are different levels of qualifications, and the basic EMT training requires 100 hours, while the advanced EMT training requires 1,000 hours. Paramedics have completed both levels of training. Many colleges now offer an Associate's degree in Paramedic medicine, and this typically takes two years to complete. In addition, many area Indiana hospitals also offer classes and training courses to help a student complete their hours. Many certifications now also require many hours of Homeland Security Training as well.

For those wanting to know how to become an EMT-Paramedic in Indiana, the internet is the best place to start. There will be lists of colleges and hospitals that offer the degree programs and training courses to qualify. EMT-Paramedic programs in Indiana may have different requirements than other states, so those who have transferred from another state need to check and see what updates they need to make in their hours and training. The annual wage for an EMT or Paramedic is $30,360, although those in the bottom ten percent only earned an average of $19,710, which is a large pay gap.

As with the other medical fields, the EMT and Paramedic fields are expected to rise 33% between now and 2020, and there is a distinct possibility that the pay scale will rise also. Once a student has completed their course work, they will be expected to pass an examination by the state of Indiana. The state of Indiana EMT or Paramedic exam is a written exam, while there is also a practical exam that is given through the state. Students with questions about their state of Indiana exams can contact the Department of Homeland Security or can go online to get help.
