An EMT is in the business of saving lives and helping people during emergency situations. Fortunately, the state of Alabama has a number of different occasions were an individual can receive the training they need in order to find employment as an emergency medical technician or paramedic. There are basically two different types of training to become an emergency medical technician available in the state of Alabama.

The first, and most basic, type of training available to become an EMT-Paramedic in Alabama generally lasts only one or two semesters and provides a person with the education they need to receive and EMT certificate. During training, a person will receive instruction on the basic emergency, clinical, and EMT skills necessary to find employment. The other EMT-Paramedic programs in Alabama that are available generally take about two years to complete and involved earning an associate degree. An individual who has become licensed as a paramedic will earn a substantially larger salary than a certified EMT.

In order to qualify for admittance into the EMT-Paramedic programs in Alabama, an individual must be at least 18 years of age and have a GED or high school diploma. A person must also possess a valid driver's license and may also need to receive certification in CPR before they can enroll in the program. The requirements to earn either and EMT certificate or to become a licensed paramedic are generally the same, but an individual should seriously consider how much time they want spend in school before deciding whether or not they prefer one course over the other.

An individual interested in how to become an EMT-Paramedic in Alabama should also understand that this type of career can be physically demanding and quite stressful since a person works primarily in emergency environment. A person who enrolls in one of the EMT-Paramedic programs in Alabama may be expected to take additional courses in subjects such as physiology and anatomy, cardiovascular electrophysiology, and have a clear understanding of how to use common tools of the trade such as crash carts. Because patient management is such a crucial aspect of this type of career, individual should have excellent communication skills as well.
