New Mexico DNP Programs

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is new to New Mexico. New Mexico State University began the first DNP program in the state in 2011, and replaced the MSN for advanced practice specialties with this more advanced degree. Similar decisions are likely to be made by other NM colleges and universities, as the AACN is pushing to move the minimum education level from MSN to DNP by 2015.

The mission of the New Mexico State University DNP program is to provide the highest possible level of nursing education. The program aims to prepare nurses who thrive in the changing demands of healthcare, and who become leaders in the field.

New Mexico State University's DNP program offers both a post-BSN and post-MSN entry-point. All courses are online for both pathways, but there is a mandatory 2-5 day on-campus orientation and seminar prior to each fall

Admission Requirements

Admissions requirements depend on whether the applicant is pursuing the post-BSN or post-MSN path. The following requirements apply to post-BSN candidates:

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited program
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
  • Unencumbered RN license
  • Successful completion of an upper-division inferential statistics course in the last 5 years
  • Agreement to commit to full-time study and annual
  • Personal interview
  • Letter of intent
  • Current CV/Resume
  • 2-4 page description of common clinical experience that should be changed
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts
  • Must meet clinical clearances and prove liability insurance

Post-MSN applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Master's degree in nursing from accredited program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
  • Unencumbered RN license
  • Current advanced practice certification
  • Successful completion of an upper-division inferential statistics course in the last 5 years
  • Agreement to commit to full-time study and annual seminars
  • Personal interview
  • Letter of intent
  • Current CV/Resume
  • 2-4 page description of common clinical experience that should be changed
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts
  • Must meet clinical clearances and prove liability insurance

The state has officially delayed the start of their DNP programs.
